CHAPTER 15

Gage

The music from the bar was blaring even through the closed door.

The day had been pretty long with nothing but class work. I couldn’t even count the number of forecast maps that I had seen today and my mind was in desperate need of a break. It had been a long time since I had to sit in a classroom for eight hours straight. Even in the academy we had time outside of class while we worked on the practical aspect of the job.

I hadn’t realized until today how desperately I had needed that time outside of the classroom in order to make it through the class work. I was fairly decent at reading a forecast map, but as each one grew in difficulty it was harder for me to see what Jackson was talking about. It was harder for me to not let my insecurities about my intelligence seep in and I wasn’t confident that I had managed to fight them off fully. When the guys had suggested that we go and let off some steam at one of the few local bars, I jumped on it.

It was nearing ten o’clock at night and I knew it would be too late to call Greyson over in Georgia, but I figured it wouldn’t be too late for Asher in Austin. I was going to have to try and find some time tomorrow to speak with Greyson, even if I had to leave class for fifteen minutes to catch him.

I pulled out my phone, very thankful that it was working, and called Asher. After a few rings he answered, but the tired-sounding voice did not go unnoticed. “You know it’s almost midnight here and I have to be up at six, right?”

Hearing the sound of his voice instantly had me smiling. I knew I should have said that I was sorry and that he could call me tomorrow so he could sleep, but I just needed to talk to him for a few minutes. To hear the slight rough tone to his voice that always told me it was Asher. They were identical twins, but there was a slight difference to their voice. Asher had a slight gruff to his tone whereas Greyson’s voice was smooth like silk.

“Sorry, I just wanted to hear your voice. It’s been five days since I’ve seen you guys.”

To some I knew five days would be nothing, but to me it felt like years. I had been around them their whole lives. Every single
